We have good news for you: all items from category "food" and their functions are completely done. We will not discover them to avoid spoilers.

Pieces of Merz will be the main currency on the island. Merz is a magic mineral (ore), which is extracted from mines of Oroliga. Trading can also be done while absolutely ignoring the currency. In-game trading is much more like exchange with ability to equalize goods' value with Merz.
